In the context of this year’s Art Basel, the symposium “Poetry of the Real: Conversations on Arts Research” presents a programme focused on negotiating the perspective of the new – intrinsic to an academy of art. The FHNW Academy of Art and Design sheds light on the development of new aesthetic practices and the emergence of a new generation of aesthetic thought and action.

“Poetry of the Real” refers to the creative-artistic work that emerges from the encounter with lived reality, sounding its range and viability by means of experimental approaches. Characteristic of this strategy is a generation of creative-artistic composit knowledge and artefacts that develop impact through the collective, negotiable expression of sensuous experience, thus conveying a new form of aesthetic bearing. By applying such a research approach, the arts meet the demands of knowledge-oriented work in its own right.

The symposium “Poetry of the Real: Conversations on Arts Research” reviews and negotiates under what conditions and in what way art and design can generate knowledge that is of relevance for society. Renowned speakers and representatives from the arts, anthropology, art history and cultural studies come together to critically reflect on the field of discourse relating to research in the arts.

They include, among others, Corina Caduff (Prof. Dr., Zurich University of the Arts, Switzerland), Carla Delfos (Executive Director, European League of Institutes of the Arts ELIA), Francesco Erspamer (Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures, Harvard University), Snežana Golubović (Serbian artist, Frankfurt am Main) Susanna Hertrich (Artist & Research Fellow, Institute of Experimental Design and Media Cultures, FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Berlin and Basel), Mikhail Karikis (PhD, Artist, Visiting Lecturer Royal College of Art, London & Senior Lecturer University of Brighton, UK), Kirsten M. Langkilde (Director, FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel), Michael Renner (Head, Institute of Visual Communication, FHNW Academy of Art and Design, Basel), Bernd M. Scherer (Director, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin) and Maxa Zoller (Lecturer for Art and Film, American University Cairo; film curator, Art Basel).
