A discussion between Dr. Yvonne Volkart and Ingo Niermann. At the beginning of the talk, an excerpt from Ingo Niermann’s and Alexa Karolinski’s video Army of Love (2016) will be shown.

Dr. Yvonne Volkart lives as an art critic and curator in Zurich. She is a lecturer in art and media theory at Academy of Art and Design FHNW Basel and Zurich University of the Arts. She is senior researcher of the SNF-funded project Times of Waste at the Institute of Experimental Design and Media Studies. Her main concerns are ecological, political and digital aesthetics; the Anthropocene; climate change; New Materialisms; gardening, landscape, nature, and technology; the non-human; trans- and intermedia; history of modernity; art and science; curatorial practices; queer and gender theory (i.e. cyberfeminism, she was member of Old Boys Network); history and performativity in the arts.

Ingo Niermann (* 1969, Bielefeld, lives in Basel) is a German writer and editor. He is the author and editor of the speculative book series Solution (Sternberg Press). In cooperation with Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin Niermann started the international digital publishing project fiktion.cc.

The Army of Love first came into existence in his book Drill Nation (2015) which envisions a unified Korea as the new model state of an affluent society. For the 9th Berlin Biennale, he collaborated with filmmaker Alexa Karolinski on the video Army of Love (2016). Further manifestations of the Army of Love are unfolding in Niermann’s novel Complete Love.
